Spring Maternity Sessions

Spring is a perfect time to have those golden hour sunset maternity photoshoots when the weather is warmer, flowers are starting to bloom, and the foliage is starting to green. While we offer outdoor maternity sessions all year long, we always get excited when those warm and sunny days start to begin.

What about wardrobe and styling for my outdoor maternity session? As part of our full-service photography you not only have access to our client closet, we also give you styling tips out of your own closet. When deciding what to wear some things to take in consideration are:

1) Location - why is this important? When it comes to wardrobe, matching neutral tones and colors to the background or outdoor location of your shoot is something you definitely want to take into consideration. For example, if you want a light and airy feel to your images; avoid bright, patterned and contrasting bold colors that can be distracting. You want to dress to compliment your surroundings so depending on whether you’d like a beach, meadow or cityscape maternity session, always start with location as a reference first.

2) Cohesiveness - Does the whole family have to wear the same color? The answer - while we love monochrome, no, outfits do not need to be the same colors but they do have to coordinate! Outfits should compliment skin tone, other family members, and make sense for the season.

3) Comfort - I truly believe when you feel comfortable and relaxed that translates to natural and beautiful photos. We all have parts of our body that we are self-conscious about - for me it’s my arms! In this case, wearing a sleeveless dress might not make you feel your best self or most confident, so let’s find something you’ll feel amazing in instead!

Spring color palettes

Neutrals

It’s no secret that neutrals are our favourite and a standard for maternity sessions for good reason. Why? Neutral tones like white, cream, beige or tan suit every skin tone and work with any background and location. There’s a purity and simpleness neutral tones that can give that boho or ethereal feel to your images.

Pop of colour

For those that prefer a gentle pop of colour, we suggest blush pink, sage green, light blues and greys. This is where dresses with a soft floral pattern can be incorporated as well to accent Spring. A pop of colour can help you stand out in your photos and add a romantic or moody feel. Perfect for an outdoor beach or grassy meadow maternity session.

Bold and beautiful

When selecting a bold color the location becomes even more important. For example, pairing a bold bright turquoise dress or strong colorful or patterned geometric outfit when you are planning a maternity session in a grassy field or meadow may not be the best choice. On the other hand, a rich burgundy colored dress for example beside a rocky riverscape would look incredible. For bold colors we suggest burgundy, deep purple, copper, dark forest green or navy blue.
