Lunar New Year Books for Kids | by Felicia Bates | Vancouver, BC

What is Lunar New Year? Year of the Tiger, red lanterns and envelopes, lion dancing... what’s it all about? Celebrations look different during these Covid times and with many things being cancelled like the Lunar New Year parade, I often find myself turning to books for my daughter so she can learn about her heritage and discover what these celebrations are all about. The basis of Lunar New Year is all about family and being together, and about welcoming a new year full of hope, luck and prosperity. Below are some great books to share with the kids to learn more about this holiday!

Baby’s First Chinese New Year by Dk

This is a quick and easy introductory board book about the Lunar New Year, with simple pictures and sentences that are easy for kids to remember. Less of a story but filled with bright colors and examples of what you may see happening around this holiday like wearing lucky colors, family and feasting etc. I recommend this for a younger child since it’s short and sweet.

Ruby’s Chinese New Year by Vickee Lee

Vibrant and beautiful illustrations help tell this story as you learn about the animals in the Chinese zodiac. Lots to discover on each page, why not add in some animal noises too while you read! Story emphasizes family being the most important part of the celebration and the book even has 3 craft ideas for you to do at the back. Make a paper lantern, fan or a good luck banner with your kiddo!

Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon by Kat Zhang

If your kid likes dragons there are plenty in this book! This beautiful, magical and heartwarming story is a favorite of many for good reason. The main character Amy learns about standing up for herself when the other kids don't understand why her dragon looks different, and how with the help of her family she teaches her classmates about her culture and dragon. Two words - Representation matters! This is a wonderful book to read for the Lunar New Year and guess what, there’s also a craft at the back of this book too.

Bringing In The New Year by Grace Lin

I love this book because it actually shows the preparations that lead up to Lunar New Year through the eyes of a family, and it introduces many customs and traditions surrounding this holiday. The artwork is colorful, bright, fun and a wonderful celebration of this holiday. By far my favorite book that’s an easy read that showcases the Lunar New Year in a simple way for my toddler to understand.
