In-Home Newborn Photo Session | Client Spotlight

When planning for a new baby, photography might be the last thing on your mind, especially during the pandemic. For many Vancouver families, mom and baby stay home for cultural reasons for the first several weeks, making it impossible to head to a studio to capture your baby during the newborn stage.

I’m here to tell you that you can commemorate this special time while hibernating at home with your newborn. An experienced photographer with a strict Health & Safety Plan can come to your home with all the equipment, props, an experienced assistant, and skills needed to create something really special. Our mobile fine art newborn studio is our specialty that sets us apart from all other photographers in the Lower Mainland.

Don’t you deserve this gift to yourself, of a nice experience AND quality portraits, especially having experienced pregnancy through Covid times when you’ve missed out on the usual celebration and support (ex. baby showers and visitors)?

This particular family were delighted to have found us, and the baby’s beautiful mama kindly answered some questions around what these photos meant to her family. I hope this helps give my readers a glimpse into my client experience!

Q: You mentioned during your session that you were specifically looking for a mobile newborn photographer who could come to your home, can you elaborate on this for our readers on why you needed a mobile photographer?

A: Our culture emphasizes on rest and recuperation for at least the first five weeks after delivery for the newborn and the mother. Hence, we generally prefer not to go outdoors for this important period postpartum. Added to that, the current pandemic further underscored the importance of staying home for the safety of everyone. As newborn photography is best performed early in the baby's life, we really appreciated the option of having a mobile photographer such as yourself who was able to accommodate us in the comfort of our own home.

Q: What does it feel like to be a new mom at home with your baby for the first several weeks?

A: It is an overwhelming mix of emotions. It is a whole new learning process which is challenging and satisfying at the same time. I feel I'm always exhausted but still have that burst of energy and always on the go.

Q: What specific qualities were you looking for in a newborn photographer, besides being mobile?

A: We really wanted someone who could understand our vision and professionally capture the little miracle of life and the pure love and joy the baby has brought in our family.

Q: Why is photography of your baby and family meaningful to you, ie. why is it important?

A: We love to celebrate all the little pleasures life has to offer including birthdays, anniversaries, accomplishments and simple daily precious moments. Our second son, the newest member of our family, has brought immense joy to each and everyone one of us. We are fortunate to have seen 4 generations in the same home and we wanted to capture these moments for all of us including for him to see when he grows up.

Q: You picked some canvases and an album to display your images, to match the pieces from your first baby’s session. Can you tell us why you’re drawn to canvases and albums?

A: I feel that canvas is a timeless piece. We have a photo wall of prints on canvas and we enjoy looking at all our memories everyday. I love albums as they are easy to pick up when we are relaxing in our living room and flip through the pages. It is something tangible to hold and look at rather than photos on a laptop or a screen.

Q: How did you find the process of finding Kim, meeting her, and booking your session?

A: I found Kim on google and followed her on instagram. It was an absolute pleasure meeting her. We had a zoom meeting for an introduction and I was very excited to work with her. She was very thorough about how she conducts her work and piqued my curiosity with respect to her mobile photography at home. She took the time to learn what aspects were important to me especially with respect to our extended family and culture.

Q: Did Kim and Sheetal (assistant) help you and your family feel comfortable having your photos taken?

A: I felt very comfortable and safe from the beginning and they were both professional. They ensured that all their equipment was sanitized and wore masks during the entire session. She has magic hands when it comes to holding babies and wrapping them in tiny little bundles. Taking photos with a four year old can be difficult and Kim made it a fun experience for my elder son. We are a family of 7 and we were all happy with the amount of time they took to include many different variations of photos. It takes a lot of patience to deal with babies, siblings and the entire family and they were both awesome!

Q: How did you find the process of viewing and selecting your photos for purchase?

A: We viewed the photos over zoom with a shared folder together with Kim who walked us through the process and different options available along with giving her recommendations. It was a very smooth process for ordering and a very fast delivery for our canvas prints. Kim is very punctual and replies very promptly to answer any questions we had.

Q: What was your favourite image from the session, and why?

A: It is hard to choose a favorite as all of them are so wonderful. I really liked the solo picture of the baby all bundled up with his hands clasped. The picture has captured such amazing details and the innocence of the newborn.

Q: You requested a photo of your baby styled in beautiful cultural accessories to celebrate your heritage, can you tell our readers about the significance behind these pieces? What is the name for these items, and what do they symbolize?

A:  We dressed our baby boy in ornaments that included bracelets, anklets, a flute and peacock feathers. The photo depicts our deity Lord Krishna also known as Bal Krishna (Baby Krishna). Krishna is known to be very colourful, mischievous, playful and lovable.  When we hear stories of baby Krishna, it radiates happiness and laughter. We loved how Kim captured the image perfectly with the colourful ornaments yet with such simplicity.
